Commander honoured for 30 years service to school’s cadet force

A teacher who has helped many Newcastle-under-Lyme School pupils to pursue officer careers in the Armed Forces is to be honoured.

Nick Carter will receive the Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire’s Award during a ceremony at the school’s Founders’ Day on Wednesday, 24 October.

Mr Ian Dudson CBE, Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire will present the award at the Founders’ Day Service at St George’s Church, Newcastle, at 11am.

Mr Carter has been Commander of the Combined Cadet Force at the school since 2003.

He began his association with the CCF 21 years earlier in 1982 after joining the school as a biology teacher.

Mr Carter, who is now Head of Year and Head of Lower School Houses, said: “It has been a great privilege to have served the Combined Cadet Force and I have been proud to witness how pupils have flourished through working with the CCF and learning its values of service and honour.

“I see this award as recognition for all the hard work carried out by CCF officers at the school over the last 30 years.”

Commander Carter, who has lived in North Staffordshire for the past 30 years, comes from a Forces family and spent his early years in Plymouth, Portsmouth and Malta as his father served in the Royal Navy.

Highlights of his CCF career have included planning over 50 cadet camps and taking cadets to sea in 2003 on board HMS Scott.

He has run a National CCF Warfare weekend for CCF cadets at HMS Raleigh in Plymouth since 1999.

Nick Rugg, Headmaster at Newcastle-under-Lyme School, said: “Commander Carter has worked tirelessly over 30 years in the service of our pupils through the CCF and the Lord Lieutenant’s recognition is a deserved award for his dedication and leadership.”

Newcastle-under-Lyme School’s CCF currently has 135 cadets and 10 officers or instructors.
