Survey of companies to help managers plan ahead

Claire Leigh

A survey of employers by Brampton Recruitment has revealed pinch points at Christmas and in the summer when productivity and staff holidays peak.

The data, from around 2000 companies surveyed by Brampton Recruitment could prove valuable for businesses as they plan for the year ahead.

December is a critical time with a majority of companies at their busiest in the run up to the festive period.

And August was also among the three busiest months, just as the summer holiday period is in full swing.

Claire Leigh, Managing Director of Brampton Recruitment, said: “We carry-out the survey so that we can monitor trends and give useful feedback to our clients.

“Data on production peaks should allow employers to plan ahead. It seems many face a double whammy with busy periods coinciding with holidays.

“Companies need to consider whether they have a plan for production peaks, for example, will they need to employ temporary staff in August and December 2014?”

Brampton Recruitment also asked its clients for information on how they motivate staff and received many positive responses.

“Around 85 per cent of managers said they believe in praising their staff and felt that this improved staff morale,” said Claire.

“Workers are more likely to go the extra mile for their employer if they are made to feel that their work is important to the overall success of the company. Effective management and communication is the key to an employee motivation strategy.

“Social events and annual bonuses were both seen as an effective motivational tool by 43 per cent of managers.

“Interestingly, only 14 per cent of managers thought prize incentives and industry qualifications worked, training and development which we found surprising.

“With 75 per cent of managers agreeing that it was more difficult to motivate staff during quieter times, could these quieter periods be a great opportunity to organise a motivational event?

“Around 2,000 companies took part which was a fantastic result.  We have sent them a report on the findings and the feedback shows they value the information and the chance to see how others operate.”
