£3.5 million school project moves a step nearer

Exciting plans for new facilities at Newcastle-under-Lyme School have been unveiled.

Plans for a new library and resources centre, the development of three new science laboratories and the refurbishment of eight other labs have been submitted to Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council by the school’s Governors.

The £3.5 million scheme, produced in conjunction with Associated Architects, would also see an increase in circulation and social space and the creation of a café and viewing area at the school in Mount Pleasant, Newcastle.

“We are thrilled to be considering such an exciting project which would mark a major investment in the future of our school. Associated Architects have a proven track record in schools and have received national awards for their work,” said Headmaster, Nick Rugg.

“The plans would provide huge benefits for pupils with a purpose built Library and Resource Centre and state of the art science labs for the Chemistry, Physics and Biology departments.

“We are very proud of the fact that this school has led the way in science teaching in Staffordshire. A number of eminent scientists, such as Professor David MacKay FRS, chief scientific adviser to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, have been educated here.

“We are still at an early stage. The plans are now with the borough council for their approval before we can move on to the tendering stage.  If we are successful, and if each stage meets with a satisfactory outcome, we can look forward to the new facility opening in September 2014.

The school has over the last four years invested over £1.8 million in projects to maintain and enhance its facilities.  A £330,000 expansion of the Sports Centre, in partnership with Badminton England, is nearing completion and will become a regional centre of excellence for the sport.
