DEVONPORT WORKERS COME FORWARD FOR HEARING TESTS

DEVONPORT WORKERS COME FORWARD FOR  HEARING TESTS

Workers at Plymouth’s historic Devonport docks who believe their hearing was damaged while at work are to be screened by audiologists.

Around 20 people have made appointments to see audiologists working on behalf of industrial injury lawyers Attwood Solicitors.

Now a second day has been set aside for hearing screening tests on Saturday, 19 March.

Industrial injury lawyers Attwood Solicitors have arranged for the free screening tests after uncovering evidence of hearing loss among shipyard workers elsewhere in the UK.

Attwood Solicitors are already acting for around 200 shipyard workers from Barrow, Cumbria, whose hearing was allegedly damaged while at work.

Principal Solicitor Ashley Attwood said:  “There has been a lot of interest from Devonport workers since we began our campaign to raise awareness of the issue of industrial hearing loss among former and current shipyard employees.

”We advise that people book screening tests in advance by telephoning 0800 587 3231, downloading the Attwood iPhone App from the App store or logging on to www.attwoodsolicitors.co.uk.”

“Attwood Solicitors has helped workers in a range of industries from truck manufacturing to quarrying but perhaps the biggest response has been from the ship building industry,” added Mr Attwood.

“We had an overwhelming response to an awareness raising campaign in the Barrow shipyards last year and, as a result, are now pursuing claims on behalf of around 200 people.”

Hearing screening tests are available to workers in any industry, not just those at Devonport docks.

Mr Attwood stressed that help is available even for people who have long retired from work.

People have up to three years to make a claim from the date hearing loss is diagnosed, even if the damage was caused years earlier.

Noise above 80 decibels – roughly the same as an average alarm clock – is considered dangerous but many older people are now suffering from damage caused before current health and safety standards were introduced.
