An annual competition aimed at boosting Newcastle-under-Lyme’s economy by inspiring business growth is now open for entries.
The Business Boost Awards looks at the potential of the borough’s small and medium sized businesses and works to encourage their growth.
Cash prizes are on offer, along with subsidised apprenticeships, membership of Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, for the winning businesses. Entrants are also given practical help in areas such as honing their business plans.
The competition was founded in 2008 and is supported by a number of local entrepreneurs, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, Keele University Science and Business Park and Aspire Housing. The awards ceremony will be on 8th October.
Past winners have included Park Hill Farm, Appointments Personnel, Peak Pursuits, Little Trove and Rydale Roofing, a business which has grown markedly since winning an award in 2010 and is now among the competition sponsors.
Another winner, Best of British Beer, which took first place in the 2012 Entrepreneurial Spirit category also now involved in organising the competition. Director Will Sherwin said: “To win the money was brilliant but Business Boost’s requirement to produce a realistic and achievable business plan has been critical to our success. Since entering Business Boost we have gone from strength to strength. We are delighted to be involved in the running of the 2015 competition.”
The competition is open to all small businesses that pay their rates or council tax to Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council whether they employ a dozen people or work out of their bedroom.
There are three categories; Entrepreneurial Spirit, Customer Focus and Recognising Social Enterprise, each with its own winner. This year, for the first time, there will be an overall winner, awarded to the business with the potential to have the greatest impact on the local economy.
Closing date for entries is 9th August. For competition details and application form go online to http://www.businessboostawards.org.uk.
