Staffordshire business Powell Design and Construction is growing its team with a strong commitment to develop young talent.
The Cheadle-based company has increased its staff from 12 to 16 as it adds projects across the UK.
Among the new additions are trainee architects Laura Mills and Finlay Cousins, who are balancing their university studies with hands-on experience at Powell. They are joined by apprentice project manager John Baggaley, who is gaining invaluable experience on the construction side of the business.
Powell Design and Construction, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, is led by husband-and-wife team Alexandra and Richard Powell.
Architect and co-founder Alexandra Powell said: “From the outset, our vision has always been to build not just a business but a platform to support young people entering the profession. Laura and Finlay share a full-time role, working under my supervision, while John is learning the ropes alongside Richard, focusing on the practical elements of construction.”
Alexandra’s own career journey began with a similar opportunity. “As a young adult, I was given the chance to work at an architecture practice, which fuelled my passion for the field. It’s incredibly rewarding to now offer that same opportunity to talented students like Laura and Finlay. During the summer, we hosted a work-experience student, adding another layer to our commitment to developing future professionals.”
In addition to running the business, Alexandra also lectures part-time at Staffordshire University, where Finlay is one of her students. Laura, an undergraduate at Loughborough University, also benefits from working closely with the team at Powell. “The experience they’re gaining with us will be invaluable in their future careers, and they’re already playing a vital role here, producing 3D models of client designs. These models bring projects to life, helping our clients to visualise their dream homes or business spaces,” Alexandra added.
The company’s ethos of ‘giving back’ extends to the construction side as well. Apprentice John Baggaley is gaining hands-on experience under Richard Powell’s guidance.
“John’s role is fully immersive, learning every aspect of construction, which will equip him with the skills needed to eventually become a project manager,” said Alexandra.
Operating from the Daisy Bank Business Centre, Powell Design and Construction works on projects across the UK, from Glasgow to Colchester. The firm specialises in high-quality house extensions, often reimagining spaces by adding large, open-plan kitchen areas through rear extensions. They also undertake commercial and public building projects, providing a holistic service from design through to construction.
