Leading regeneration experts to address special North Staffordshire Society of Architects event celebrating Stoke-on-Trent’s centenary

An architect behind Stoke-on-Trent’s new Goods Yard development and a nationally renowned regeneration leader with roots in the Potteries will be the key speakers at an event looking at architecture in the city over 100 years.

The North Staffordshire Society of Architects is staging a special event on Saturday, October 18, to mark the centenary of Stoke-on-Trent as a city.

Building the Century will look at landmarks over the past century and forwards to the future, said group secretary, Alexandra Powell.

“We are delighted to be able to welcome both Fraser Godfrey and Dave Chetwyn to our event at the Burslem School of Art, said Alexandra, a Chartered Architect from locally based Powell Design and Construction. “Visitors will be able to see an exhibition looking at architecture in the city over 100 years, an awards ceremony where architecture students will be recognised, and networking with architects and developers.”

Fraser Godfrey is a Director at Howells, leading a Design Studio from Birmingham.  Howells have worked on numerous landmark projects, with Fraser delivering projects including the BBC’s Tea Factory in Birmingham, i9 Wolverhampton, Gloucester Services, and most recently, the Goods Yard, in Stoke.

The £60 million project, close to Stoke Station, has led to the creation of a new neighbourhood of 174 rental homes, 30,000 sq. ft. of workspace, independent bars, eateries, coffee shops and stores, and a lush, green public square designed for socialising, pop-ups and al fresco eats.

Dave Chetwyn began his career as a planning officer at Stoke-on-Trent City Council and rose through regional development and regeneration roles to play a leading role at national level. He has chaired the board of the National Planning Forum, and the Institute of Historic Building Conservation, and is Managing Director of Urban Vision, a Liverpool based consultancy that specialises in planning, regeneration projects, neighbourhood planning, community-led development, heritage-led regeneration, urban design, community engagement, education, training and third sector organisational development.
