A dance academy is treating customers to a change of pace with its first ever Tai Chi course.

Stafford Tai Chi instructor Alan Smewing is bringing the ancient Chinese art to the town’s Groove Academy dance studio.

The new classes are set to prove popular with young and old as a way to relax and improve both physical and mental health.

Tai Chi is featured by the NHS Choices as a way to reduce stress, strengthen muscles and improve balance.

Groove Academy owner, Kate Beauchamp, said: “Tai Chi is known as Meditation in Motion. It has many benefits for people of all ages and is excellent for older people as it incorporates the benefits of yoga without having to get down on the floor.

“Alan is a master of the Chen style of Tai Chi which is known for its long, slow movements.”

Tai Chi classes are to be held at the Groove Academy dance studio, the Northfield Centre, Stafford, on Tuesday evenings (7.15 – 8.15pm). There is no specific length of course, although Alan says the 11 sequences of moves that he teaches will take an average of a year to master.

Originally from Reading, Alan settled in Stafford after studying at Staffordshire University. He said that he first started martial arts after putting on weight at university and gained a Black Belt

“Tai Chi can be practised for a variety of reasons: health, martial art skills, aesthetics, meditation or as an athletic/competition sport,” explained Alan. “The slow movements make it a low impact exercise that can help to build strength and improve balance and co-ordination and because of this it is often recommended for older people.

“After a stressful day a bit of Tai Chi always relaxes me.”
