Providing health and wellbeing services to individuals is Tonic’s 21st birthday gift after years of success supporting organisations across the UK

Wellbeing in the workplace experts Tonic has set its sights on supporting individuals for the first time with the launch of Tonic Solo.

The Keele based business, launched 21 years ago by Becca Clayton, has a national client list of companies which want to provide health support for their staff.

Becca said: “Many businesses now appreciate that prioritising workplace wellbeing and fostering a culture of health and wellness is essential for their businesses to thrive. A healthy workforce is a productive workforce. The same applies to individuals and communities, so for the first time, anyone can sign up for Tonic Solo, a service giving wide-ranging support including access to the Tonic team, which includes a former NHS GP.”

Tonic Solo gives users unlimited access to an ever-expanding library of health, wellbeing, and lifestyle guidance.

Subscribers benefit from a monthly wellbeing topic, a live webinar, a bi-monthly masterclass, and resources such as recipes, meditations, and even quizzes with monthly prizes – plus, coming soon, the option to book a 22-point online health check.

“What really makes a difference to a workplace, community or even team is creating an authentic culture of wellbeing; a culture that celebrates openness, encourages communication, and makes it achievable to put health, both mental & physical, at the top of the agenda,” said Becca.

“There are many benefits to having a comprehensive wellbeing in the workplace programme. Fundamentally, we offer peace of mind, one in three working age people in the UK has a health condition, and it can be diffuicult to access traditional health services for many people during working hours.

“From an employer’s point of view, there are many measurable benefits.

“The starting point is the Tonic health check, a confidential service, looking at a range of biometrics, such as body composition to height, blood pressure, resting heart rate, muscle mass, and bone mass.

“Helping people to feel empowered can set people on the road to better health and fitness. These initial checks can be followed up with tests to determine blood sugar or cholesterol levels and the Tonic lifestyle assessment, where we delve into issues such as sleep patterns, alcohol consumptions, activity and stress levels.”

In a survey by Tonic Wellbeing, more than 8 out of 10 employees said the programme had led to them making healthier lifestyle choices.

Becca said there are many measurable benefits for companies from a healthier workforce. The Health and Safety Executive says 17.9 million days are lost each year to work-related stress, depression or anxiety, and a report by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) says the cost to UK businesses of presenteeism – where people are in work but feel unable to fulfil their responsibilities – is over £15 billion every year.

All Tonic services can be accessed through the Tonic & Me app. Employers sign staff members up starting at a cost of £10 per team member per month with a minimum sign up of 12 months,This includes a full health check. The app is available on the Apple and Android platforms, offering unlimited access to a library of health, wellbeing and lifestyle guidance and support.

Tonic team members, including retired GP Nick Fildes, health, fitness, and wellbeing coaches, nutritional therapists, massage therapists, and counsellors, are on call as needed, and the service can be brought into company work premises, with Tonic Practitioners often setting up a clinic to deliver on-site health checks.

Becca, an experienced stress management & performance coach, set up Tonic from her home in Alton, Staffordshire Moorlands, in 2004, and has grown a team of 15 practitioners.

She said: “There’s great benefit in offering a holistic joined-up service, led by practitioners with individual disciplines, to create a whole person solution. My aim was to develop a service that helps organisations of all sizes take the mental and physical health of their people seriously and we have achieved this over 21 years through nurturing a team of skilled and loyal practitioners.”

“The benefits of wellbeing in the workplace are now firmly embedded in many larger organisations but there’s much work to be done with smaller companies and solo-entrepreneurs.

“One of my aims for 2025 is to grow more awareness in SME and micro-businesses and that will start by working close to home here in Staffordshire, linking up with local companies & charities directly plus partnering with HR, Recruitment, and H&S practitioners.
