Sun Shines to Scoop Pub of the Month Award

A popular Stafford pub is celebrating an award from beer lovers less than a year after it re-opened.

The Sun Inn has been named as Pub of the Month for May by Heart of England CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale).

The Lichfield Road pub re-opened in July 2010 after being bought and restored to its former glory by Staffordshire based Titanic Brewery.

After trading as a traditional style inn for most of its life, the Sun, in Lichfield Road, had been operating as a Mexican restaurant.

Titanic Brewery is based in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, and is owned by brothers Keith and Dave Bott who were born and grew up in Stafford.

The brewery has opened four pubs in North and Mid Staffordshire in the past three years – dramatically bucking a trend which has seen record pub closures.

Dave Bott said: “Re-opening the Sun Inn was special as we remember it in its former role as a traditional pub and enjoyed a pint their as young men.

“I am pleased to say that it has gone from strength to strength since the relaunch and is generally very busy regardless of the time or day of the week. We held our first Sun Inn beer festival in a marquee over the recent bank holiday weekend with over 50 real ales on offer.”

“Our joint pub managers, Steve Aukim and Tom Sinnot, have worked really hard and we are delighted that they have received their first CAMRA Pub of the Month award. As a producer and sales outlet for real ale, it is a special honour to be recognised by CAMRA members.”

Titanic Brewery was founded in Burslem in 1985 and has grown to produce more than two million pints of fine ale every year. It is owned by Stafford born brothers Keith and Dave Bott. Keith is Chairman of SIBA, the society of independent brewers. The brewery name is in recognition of Stoke-on-Trent as the birthplace of Captain Edward Smith, Master of the ill fated Titanic ocean liner.

The Sun Inn is the fifth Titanic pub. The others are –

The Bulls Head, St John’s Square, Burslem

The Greyhound, George Street, Newcastle-under-Lyme

The White Star, Kingsway, Stoke

The Royal Exchange, Radford Street, Stone.
