Businesses to benefit from expert guide to employing an apprentice

A North Staffordshire employment lawyer is hosting a seminar to support companies considering taking on an apprentice.

Karen Coleman will be supported at the event by Andy Talbot, of Stepping Stones Education and Training and Emma Crowe, a pay roll expert from CE Back Office Ltd.

The seminar, to be held at Summit Hospitality, Newcastle-under-Lyme, is free to attend and is aimed at both companies looking to take on their first apprentice and at businesses who have an apprentice but want to ensure they are fully compliant with the law. It takes place on 20 March, from 8am to 10am.

“Employing apprentices can bring many benefits to a company but changes in legislation may have confused some employees,” said Karen. “This can perhaps be seen by a slump in the numbers starting apprenticeships following new regulations in 2017 but the most recent figures suggest the appetite to take on trainees is now growing again.

During the seminar, Karen will cover Apprenticeship Agreements and what to include in them and employment law matters that employers should be aware of when hiring an Apprentice including working time, age discrimination and termination.

Andy Talbot will be looking at the criteria for an apprenticeship and recruitment of apprentices, as well as providing information on the latest financial support available (including grants for 16-18 year olds) and the utilisation of apprentice levy funds.

Emma Crowe will inform delegates about then look at the National Minimum Wage for Apprentices, including paying for training time, changes due to age and length of apprenticeship, as well as the method of calculating and reporting the apprenticeship levy payments.

Karen, of Norton Green, Stoke-on-Trent, advises a national client base of companies from large corporates to owner-managed businesses on all aspects of employment law, working as an independent employment lawyer with the support of new model national law firm Excello Law.

She added: I’m delighted to be working with Andy and Emma on this seminar. Andy is a director at Stepping Stones, Newcastle-under-Lyme,  who are well known providers of training solutions for employers and staff, while Emma founded CE Back Office, a Nantwich based company with a mission to make payroll simple for businesses of all shapes and sizes.
