New jobs at thriving water safety specialists – and age is no barrier to recruitment

New jobs are on offer at a growing water safety company SAS Water and the firm is among more and more companies who say they are open to applicants from older workers.

SAS Water Ltd wants to recruit a water safety engineer, with plumbing experience, and a water safety risk assessor.

The company, which is based in Leek, Staffordshire and works across the UK, needs to grow its team following recent contract wins.

The water safety engineer/plumber will ideally situated within one hour’s drive time from Bradford, to help SAS Water to work with customers in Yorkshire and Lancashire, with the risk assessor working from home, with a need to visit the company’s Staffordshire Moorlands’ base.

Managing Director Lizzie Ward said: As a company, we support apprenticeships and opportunities for school and college leavers, but we’re also very keen to offer opportunities to people of all ages. There are workers, such as firefighters who often retire early, but may want to work for many years into the future, and, of course armed forces veterans.

“For example, our water safety jobs are ideal for anyone who has learned a trade as a plumber in the Royal Engineers. We can add to their skills with training as a water safety engineer. It may well be a role that proves attractive to  slightly older plumbers who don’t want to be scrambling about on their hands and knees in a traditional plumbing job.

“Much of the work, with us, will involve assessing whether water systems are fit for purpose in terms of prevention of legionella and other bacteria in the workplace.

“New recruits will join an experienced team who work across the UK to ensure companies are doing all they can to keep people safe from Legionnaires’ Disease and other waterborne issues.”

SAS Water work across many industries, clients include large social housing providers, factories, quarries, care homes and the hospitality and leisure sector.

“The law states any building where more than five people are employed, or which has visitors, must, by law, demonstrate they have a strategy to mitigate legionella growth and must train and educate their employees,” explained Lizzie.

“There’s also specific rules for business sectors, for example, the strength of a care home’s legionella prevention strategy will be assessed as part of a Care Quality Commission inspection, and, as the reports, are made public, we know that some care companies do face criticism and potential sanctions.

“As a result, we will offer a free of charge site visit for any care home who need support and our water engineer plumbers will be involved in any work that arises. But the law on prevention applies for all businesses across every sector.

While best known for its legionella work, SAS Water has expertise across a wide range of water safety disciplines, for example, testing for chemicals in industrial water, work with closed water systems and as an expert member of water safety groups which involve a team of experts working for a large organisation such as a council or health centre.
